Raised in a Quaker family, she moved to California with her family when she was six years old. West attended Fullerton Union High School and Whittier College, where she participated in the establishment of the Palmer Society. She graduated from Whittier in 1923.
Literary Beginnings
West's first published work, the short story "99.6," appeared in 1939.
She gained recognition with the publication of several short stories in literary magazines. Her debut novel, "The Friendly Persuasion" (1945), was set in Quaker Books by Jessamyn West (Author of The Friendly Persuasion) MONIJ
